Child Care in Delta

Delta recognizes that child care is an essential part of a community’s social infrastructure. In addition to helping the families and children using it, child care benefits the broader population, contributes to the economy, and enhances the overall health and well-being of the community. Parents are facing new challenges in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic as it has disrupted the daily routines of families. Women are disproportionally affected as they carry a larger share of parenting tasks prior and during the global public health crisis. The pandemic highlighted the essential role of child care not only for working parents but the economy at-large.

There are multiple jurisdictions involved in the planning, funding and delivery of child care (primarily federal and provincial responsibility). While local governments do not have an assigned role, generally they can assist with facilitating the establishment of quality child care in their communities through collaboration, partnerships and supportive actions.

Delta's Child Care Needs Assessment and Action Plan

In 2019, the Union of BC Municipalities provided funding for the City of Delta to complete a Child Care Needs Assessment and develop a Child Care Strategy and Action Plan. The Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia (SPARC BC) was retained to conduct the study. Working with partner agencies throughout Delta and SPARC BC, the project was completed in the fall of 2020. See Delta Child Care Action Plan infographics with a summary of proposed actions.
