Kirkland House Bridge Replacement

Overview

The Kirkland House Bridge Replacement project consists of the removal and replacement of the bridge located at 4140 Arthur drive, across the Chillukthan Slough in Delta. The existing bridge, built in 1994, is a timber log stringer bridge with a timber deck. Deterioration over time has lowered the vehicle load capacity of the bridge and therefore essential improvements are required to ensure the bridge meets the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and can accommodate Delta Fire and Emergency Services’ large fire vehicles.

The new bridge has also been designed to reflect the Edwardian style of Kirkland House which is a century-old farm house built in 1911.

Proposed improvements include:

  • A 4.5m wide travel lane and a new 1.8m wide raised sidewalk
  • A steel frame and timber deck with a shallow arch including a timber raised sidewalk
  • Timber hand rails with cross-rails and narrow spacing between posts to reflect the simplistic look of the Edwardian style
  • New street light

Project Timeline

The bridge replacement works will commence mid February 2017, taking approximately 8 weeks to complete. During this time, Kirkland House and Harris Barn will be closed to the public.
