2014 Earth Day Photo Contest Winners
Mayor Lois E. Jackson announced the winners of the 2014 Earth Day Photo Contest. The grand prize goes to Rob Mclean for his stunning Red Potato Field in Bloom photograph, and Dale Huber received the fan favourite designation for his Tide Pool Discoveries photograph. Ladner Leisure Centre Façade
Council viewed a presentation by Greg Scott, Deputy Director of Development, that outlined the project schedule and budget for the Ladner Leisure Centre façade remediation. Council approved the $3.8 million (inclusive of 5% GST) budget and project recommendations. View the presentation.
Facility Rental Fee Grant – Jog for the Bog and International Bog Day
Council approved the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department's recommendation to award a Facility Rental Fee Grant of 100% of the facility rental (to a maximum of $900) to the Burns Bog Conservation Society for use of the Delta show stage at the Society's Jog for the Bog and International Bog Day. Ladner Pioneer May Days and North Delta Family Day Grants
Council approved the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department's recommendation to award a Community Festival Grant of $3,000 to the Ladner Pioneer May Days Committee, and $6,000 to the North Delta Family Day Committee. Ladner Pioneer May Days will be held May 23–25, 2014, and North Delta Family Day will be held on June 22, 2014. View the staff report.
Facility Rental Fee Grant – Laura Szendrei Walk, Run & Roll Event
Council approved the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department's recommendation to award a Facility Rental Fee Grant of $945 to the Laura Szendrei Memorial Scholarship Foundation Society for use of the Delta show stage at the 2014 Laura Szendrei Walk, Run & Roll event on June 1, 2014. Independent Interagency Review Committee: Transportation and Handling of Coal
Council approved the Independent Interagency Review Committee's recommendation that, on behalf of the Corporation of Delta, the Chief Administrative Officer sign a letter from the Committee requesting that Port Metro Vancouver postpone any decision regarding the Fraser Surrey Docks coal facility application until outstanding issues have been addressed. Council also approved that Mayor Lois E. Jackson send a letter supporting the position to Robin Silvester, President and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver. View the staff report.
Proposed Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project Update
Council received an update regarding the National Energy Board review of the proposed Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project and Metro Vancouver's application to be an intervenor in the process. The formal process of the National Energy Board Hearings has commenced; oral hearings are scheduled for February 2015. View the staff report.
Contaminated Sites and Drinking Water Use Designations
Council approved a staff recommendation to send a letter to the BC Minister of Environment requesting area exemptions from the BC Contaminated Sites Regulation Drinking Water Use Designation for commercial and industrial areas in Delta's floodplain. View the staff report.
Solid Waste and Recycling Programs and Services: 2014 Update
Council received an update on Delta's Solid Waste and Recycling Programs and Services, including highlights that Delta's Green Can program reduced residential garbage by 10% in the first full year of implementation, and public space food waste collection is currently being piloted at civic facilities.
