The Great BC ShakeOut Earthquake Drill
Oct 12, 2018
Are you ready to shake?
On October 18th at 10:18 am, thousands of British Columbians in classrooms, offices and homes across the province will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold on” during the annual Great BC ShakeOut earthquake drill.
#ShakeOutBC is a great way for Delta residents, families and businesses to practice the “Drop, Cover and Hold on” protocol when an earthquake occurs. You can register your family or workplace for the #ShakeOut BC earthquake drill - registration is now open on their website.
About “Drop, Cover and Hold On”
Use of the internationally recognized "Drop, Cover and Hold On" protocol continues to be advocated by rescue teams around the world and is explained as follows:
- DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
- Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
- HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.
If there isn’t a table or desk near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Do not try to run to another room just to get under a table. These are general guidelines for most situations. Depending on where you are (in bed, driving, in a theater, etc.), you might take other actions, as described in Recommended Earthquake Safety Actions available on the ShakeOut BC website.
Additional information on this public safety initiative is available on the Great BC ShakeOut website. For more information on emergency preparedness, call Delta’s Emergency Management Office at 604-952-3101 or email email@example.com.
