Proposed Bylaw Amendment to Ban Shark Fins

Feb 12, 2019

Mayor Harvie and Delta Council gave three readings to a Business Licence Bylaw amendment that bans the sale and trade of shark fins at the February 11, 2019 Regular Meeting of Council. The proposed fine for possessing, trading, selling or distributing shark fin is $500 under the Bylaw Notice Enforcement Bylaw and $1,000 under the Municipal Ticketing Information bylaw, which are the maximum fees allowed under each bylaw. While the Federal and Provincial governments have jurisdiction over the import and distribution of shark fin, the City’s proposed bylaw amendment will assist with Delta’s continued lobbying efforts to show senior levels of government that this issue is important at a local level.

The proposed bylaw amendment also addresses emerging issues related to signage advertising businesses, the condition of secondary suites, and overflow traffic of shipping container businesses. The bylaw amendment will be presented to Delta Council for final consideration and adoption at the March 11, 2019 Regular Meeting.
