2019 Heritage Recognition Awards

Mayor Harvie awarded volunteer organizers of North Delta Family Days, Ladner May Days and the Tsawwassen Sun Festival community events with a Heritage Recognition Award. The award honours the long-term contributions these volunteers have made towards the success of these long-running community festivals.

MP Carla Qualtrough Presents to Council

The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Member of Parliament for Delta, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility, Interim Treasury Board President and Minister of Digital Government presented information to Council on federally funded projects and grant opportunities in Delta. The Minister spoke of the positive relationship between her and the Mayor’s office, noting collaboration is good for the community.

Shark Fin Ban Adopted by Council

Council gave final consideration and adoption to a Business Licence Bylaw amendment that prohibits the possession, trade, sale and distribution of shark fins or their derivative products within Delta. Included in the amendment are changes to address emerging issues related to signage, secondary suites and the overflow traffic of shipping container businesses. View the staff report.

Money Laundering Counter-Measures in Casinos

In response to ongoing community concerns regarding the potential for money laundering at the new casino under construction in Delta, Council approved a recommendation requesting that the provincial and federal governments conduct a joint review of cashless gaming systems as an effective method of preventing money laundering in casinos. Council also approved the submission of Delta resolutions to both UBCM and FCM to generate local government support and advocacy for senior governments to take stronger action to prevent money laundering in casinos. Council Supports Ladner Business Association’s Light Up Ladner Village Initiative

Council approved the allocation of up to $15,000 in annual funding for the next four years to the Ladner Business Association to support its Light Up Ladner Village and #DiscoverLadner initiatives. Light Up Ladner Village involves the annual installation of approximately 300 strings of LED lights on trees located in the Village from dusk until 11pm through the months from mid-October to March. Facility Rental Fee Grants Awarded for Community-based Events

Council approved a facility rental fee grant to the following organizations for their upcoming events:

  • Burns Bog Conservation Society for Jog for the Bog in the Delta Nature Reserve on July 21, 2019
  • The Community of Hope Church for an Outdoor Movie Night at Wade Park on August 9, 2019
  • Tsawwassen Sun Festival Society for the Tsawwassen Sun Festival, which will run from August 2-5, 2019
  • Delta Farmers Institute for a Farmers Ball scheduled for November 16, 2019 at the Harris Barn.

2019 UBCM Resolutions

Council approved that the City’s 2019 resolutions be forwarded to the Lower Mainland Local Government Association (LMLGA) for endorsement and to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for its annual convention. Delta resolutions were prepared on the following topics: Preservation of Archaeological Artifacts; Funding for Climate Change Adaptation – Flood Protection; Outstanding Statutory Rights of Way; Restricting Cannabis Cultivation on the Agricultural Land Reserve; Money Laundering Counter-Measures in Casinos; and Water Sustainability Act Review Times. Delta Library Updates

Council received an update on the upgrades completed in Delta’s libraries last year, along with planned upgrades for this year, which include the development of a single central integrated service desk at George Mackie Library. View the staff report.
