Mayor’s statement re: UBCM Convention Reception hosted by the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China
Jun 28, 2019
Mayor George V. Harvie has issued the following statement regarding the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) 2019 Convention:
“I will be attending this year’s UBCM convention, however, I will not be attending the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver reception. The annual Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention is an excellent opportunity for local governments from around the province to get together to discuss important issues and to meet with the provincial government on key items.”
“The issue of UBCM having a sponsorship agreement with the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China is concerning and I am opposed to foreign influence in our local affairs. I will be discussing this matter with Metro Vancouver Mayors at our next Committee meeting and taking steps to avoid any perception of foreign influence in my work at the UBCM convention in September.”
