City of Delta Launches Second Phase of Planting Our Roots – Free Tree Project

After the overwhelming success of the first phase of the Planting Our Roots – Free Tree Project in spring of 2024, the City of Delta is excited to be giving away another 250 trees to Delta residents this fall.

From Wednesday, September 18 to Wednesday, September 25, Delta residents will be able to enter a draw to win a free tree, which will be delivered to their door in October. Not only does this initiative help residents beautify their property, it also contributes to the City’s goal of 40% canopy cover, as outlined in the Urban Forestry Strategy.

“Delta truly embraced Planting Our Roots this past spring, and I am glad to see the project back again, giving away 250 more trees to enrich our community,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “Initiatives like Planting Our Roots strengthen community bonds, enhance our neighbourhoods, and benefit Delta’s natural environment. I encourage Delta residents to enter the contest for a chance to win their very own free tree.”

Starting September 18 at 10:00 am, Delta residents will have a week to sign up for a free tree, after which time 250 recipients will be chosen through random draw. This season’s giveaway will include five varieties of trees including, Vine Maple, Dawyck Purple Beech, Judy Zuk Magnolia, California Incense Cedar, and Liberty Apple. When entering the draw, residents will rank the five species based on preference and trees will be given away based on a combination of the ranking and remaining availability of tree varieties. Recipients will receive their free tree in mid-October, in time for fall planting.
