Do you own a heritage property? Are you looking to preserve its character and longevity? The City of Delta has a program for that and it is expanding.
Council has approved several amendments to the Heritage Conservation Grant program to help residents with repairs and restorations that preserve and protect heritage buildings.
“Delta is fortunate to have many homes of historical significance, and we want to support the preservation of these buildings for future generations. These updates will make it easier for more residents to access funding,” says Mayor George V. Harvie.
Earlier this year, Delta conducted an engagement program to understand the obstacles property owners face in preserving their heritage buildings. Based on this input, the following amendments were put forward to improve the program, allowing for more flexibility and increased accessibility:
- Increase the maximum financial assistance for a property in a single year from $30,000 to $50,000;
- Increase the financial assistance to 100% of the capital costs of an approved project for accessibility upgrades to a maximum $150,000; and,
- Expand eligibility criteria to include energy efficient projects that preserve a heritage property.
To be eligible for a Heritage Conservation Grant, the property owner must agree to place the building on Delta's Heritage Register and enter into a heritage maintenance restrictive covenant that protects the building from demolition and prevents significant impacts to the building’s heritage features for a period of 10 years without additional approval.
