Fields Usage & Maintenance
In the City of Delta, we are dedicated to providing top-quality sports fields for a diverse range of outdoor activities, including baseball, soccer, and more. Our region's mild climate allows for year-round use, making collaboration between City staff, user groups, and the public essential to maintaining safe and enjoyable spaces for the entire community.
Our maintenance schedule is based on past experience and continuous monitoring of field conditions. To ensure the best possible turf quality, we incorporate rest periods between periods of heavy use to allow for turf recovery. Effective field management involves balancing three key factors:
- Total Playtime: Carefully monitoring and controlling the amount of play each field receives to prevent overuse and support turf recovery.
- Timing of Usage: Scheduling field use to maximize availability, minimize wear and tear, and optimize the impact of maintenance activities.
- Rest Period Scheduling: Determining the optimal rest period for each field based on the specific needs of the turf and the access needs of users.
Each field receives individualized care. The following sections outline the maintenance procedures carried out by the City of Delta Parks team for each field type.
Ball Diamond Field Maintenance & Care
Our parks team takes a comprehensive approach to ball diamond care. Field preparations include removing weeds, edging and levelling transitions, grading, adding material, and preparing mound and home plate areas. This is supported by a full range of turf grass cultural practices — including irrigation scheduling and maintenance, turf repairs, aerations, verticutting, top dressing, overseeding, annual fertility programs, pest and weed control, field lining, debris removal, and regular mowing.
The resources below highlight key practices for maintaining safe, playable, and high-quality ball diamond fields. They are intended for coaches, parents, volunteers, and anyone involved in field setup or post-use care. We encourage you to share these with your coordinators, coaches, teams, and volunteers — consistent field care by all user groups plays an important role in maintaining these spaces for the entire community.

Synthetic Field Maintenance & Care
Our parks team maintains synthetic fields through regular grooming and brushing to keep turf fibres upright, infill redistribution, debris and litter removal, and inspections of seams, edges, and high-use areas for wear. Drainage performance and infill depth are monitored regularly, with deep cleaning and professional inspections carried out on an annual basis.
How Your Team Helps
Local sports associations are valued partners in the upkeep of Delta's sports fields. Through collaboration and shared responsibility, we can preserve field quality and consistently deliver outstanding outdoor sports experiences for everyone. We ask that all user groups conduct a quick review of field conditions before play and ensure that any equipment used is returned to its original location. Small efforts by every team add up, and together we can keep Delta's fields enjoyable for the entire community.
