Planting Our Roots – Free Tree Project is returning for a third fall season, giving residents the chance to receive a free tree for their property. The program has now distributed over 1250 trees since it launched in 2024, helping to bolster Delta’s urban tree canopy and enhance local biodiversity.
“I’m pleased to see this program continuing to grow, delivering more trees to residents across our community,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “Planting Our Roots has become something residents look forward to each spring and fall, enabling them to play a role in adding to our urban canopy.”
Coinciding with National Tree Day on September 23, the online registration form will open at 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 22, and close at 11:59 PM on Thursday, September 24. Eligible households can submit an entry and 250 recipients will be selected by random draw.
When completing the form, residents can rank their preferences from 10 available tree species, including two selections that are native to BC, the garry oak and vine maple. The following trees are available this season:
- Crested Japanese Cedar
- Dawyck Purple European Beech
- Desert King Fig
- Dura Heat River Birch
- Forest Pansy Redbud
- Garry Oak
- Liberty Apple
- Saratoga Maidenhair Tree
- Snowcone Japanese Snowbell
- Vine Maple
All tree recipients will receive planting and care instructions to help their trees thrive. Residents are responsible for notifying BC 1 Call before digging, and ensuring the tree is located within the boundaries of their property.
