With forecasts predicting the region will see more precipitation and colder temperatures this year, the City of Delta is taking steps to ensure the community is prepared for winter weather.
“Whether it’s rain, hail, slush, or snow—they all bring challenges to keeping our community moving and we’re committed to making sure that we’re ready for whatever may come,” says Mayor George V. Harvie. “Recently, Council was pleased to hear about the work City staff are doing to prepare for the season ahead. We have established a priority system for road clearing, the Snow Angels program will be available again for those who need it, and staff are prepared to respond to potential flooding risks due to King Tides. By working together and everyone doing their part, we can keep our community safe and thriving, no matter the weather.”
At the November 3, 2025 Regular Meeting, Delta Council was presented with a Winter Season Preparedness Update. The update outlined that in advance of the upcoming season, Delta has:
- Completed staff training;
- Scheduled a night shift driver from December 1 to March 15;
- Established a supply of sand and sandbags for potential flood events;
- Stockpiled 2,900 metric tonnes of salt; and,
- Installed a new brining system at the North Delta Works Yard, increasing capacity to 107,000 litres of brine.
This comes in addition to the City’s Snow and Ice Control Policy—updated in 2024—which has established an enhanced snow and ice management approach with six priority levels. The priority-based system focuses on clearing significant municipal roadways (Priorities 1–3) on a 24/7 basis for as long as poor conditions persist. Local roads (Priorities 4–6) will be cleared during regular business hours, with priority given to higher elevation areas. More details on the priority system can be found at www.delta.ca/snow.
In addition to the City’s roadways, Delta is prioritizing pedestrian safety by maintaining sidewalks near parks and municipal facilities, and pedestrian overpasses on Highway 17A and Nordel Way. Commercial property owners and tenants remain responsible for their frontages, and residents are strongly encouraged to keep their sidewalks and driveways clear of snow.
Major arteries like Highways 99, 17, and 91 remain under provincial jurisdiction and any inquiries about the clearing of these routes should be directed to the province’s contractor, Mainroad Contracting.
For updates on snow clearing, residents can call the City’s winter road conditions hotline at 604-952-3820, updated every four hours during snow events. Updates will also be posted on Delta’s social media channels and at delta.ca/news. Emergent issues can be reported via the DeltaConnect app or by calling 604-946-4141 (press 2 after hours).
