Is this your first time at a recreation class?
Read about what you can expect when joining a community recreation class for the very first time.
What’s Happening
I am going to take a class at the Recreation Centre. I will learn a new skill, participate in some activities and meet new people.

Where
My class takes place at the recreation centre.
I will participate in an activity or learn a new skill.

Who
My instructors or coaches will help me and keep me safe.
There will be other children in the class, too.

Steps
- Arrive and check in.
- Put my belongings in a specific spot.
- Join in the activities
- Listen to my instructor or coach for direction and when it’s time to change activities.
- At the end of the class, my parent/guardian will pick me up.

Sensory Expectations
Classes can be loud and busy with other children.
Sometimes the lights are bright.
Some rooms can echo.
Sitting or standing still to listen to directions and watch demonstrations can be challenging.

Safety Rules
- Stay with my group.
- Listen to my leaders.
- Use kind words and gentle hands.
- Leave my special belongings at home.

Feelings & Coping
I might feel excited, shy, or nervous.
I can ask for help or take some deep breaths if I need a break.

Closure
I had fun at this class and can’t wait to come back the next time!
