Support in Delta’s Facilities
Providing programming and volunteer support is a primary objective for all Community Recreation Programs and Services, with a focus on accessibility and inclusivity for patrons and participants of all ages in Delta facilities. The City of Delta offers a variety of accessible recreation supports, including volunteer assistance through the Peer Support Program, inclusive recreation opportunities, and free facility access for support volunteers. Physical Accessibility in Delta’s Facilities
The City of Delta has been successful in receiving grant funding from the Rick Hansen Foundation for the enhancement of facilities in relation to accessibility. Through the Rick Hansen Foundation, Delta has been awarded Gold certification for accessibility for Sungod Recreation Centre, and full certification status for Ladner Leisure Centre and Kennedy Senior Recreation Centre.
Some recent upgrades for accessibility include:
- Expansion of the playground at North Delta Recreation Centre to include wheelchair-accessible play equipment, rubber surfacing and more.
- Upgraded accessibility trail standards at Delta parks
- Purchase of new equipment for facility usage, including personal assistance lifts and flotation chairs for pool access and sliders allowing wheelchair access on the ice
Mobility and Accessibility Committee
Formed in accordance with the Accessible British Columbia Act, Delta’s Mobility and Accessibility Committee provides advice to the City on new infrastructure projects with potential mobility and accessibility impacts, opportunities to enhance access and mobility across existing City infrastructure, programs to meet the needs of people with disabilities, and other issues referred by Council or the City manager.
Some initiatives that the Committee has recently provided advice on include:
- Winskill Aquatic Centre
- Annieville Park Master Plan
- The City’s Canada Day Celebration
In addition, the Committee identifies accessibility issues and advises on general day-to-day accessibility upgrades, recently including:
- The addition of a wheelchair viewing area at Sungod Recreation Centre,
- Accessible parking upgrades at North Delta Rec Centre, and
- The installation of accessible washroom doors throughout City Hall.
The Committee also provided input on the development of Delta’s Accessibility Plan. Review the Accessibility Plan.
