City of Delta and REACH Open New Accessible Playground Expansion

REACH Playground Expansion at NDRC News Image

On Tuesday, November 18, the City of Delta, in partnership with the REACH Child and Youth Development Society, opened a new accessible expansion to the existing playground at North Delta Recreation Centre.

Funded in part by grants from the Province of British Columbia and Tire Stewardship of BC, and a donation from Tasty Indian Bistro the new playground optimizes accessibility while introducing a variety of new features for different age groups. These enhanced features include a rubber playground surface with a tricycle track, a shade umbrella, seating deck, a play boat and hut, drum, seesaw, in-ground trampoline, and climbing and crawl-through structures. While the expansion will be used by REACH and the City of Delta to accommodate programming, it will also be fully available to the public.

After public engagement in spring 2024 helped determine the scope of the project, City staff worked with designers to realize some of the needs identified by the community. The feedback highlighted accessible surfacing, fenced enclosure, shade, and more seating as some of the key elements to be integrated into the expansion. Work on the playground began in spring 2025 and finished in early fall.

The Province of British Columbia’s Community Gaming Grant Program provided $201,372 in funding for the playground expansion, alongside money raised by REACH, which included donations from Tasty Indian Bistro and the BC Aboriginal Society, and a grant from Tire Stewardship BC. The City of Delta provided space and construction management for the project, as well as the remainder of the cost, up to $150,000, towards the project’s completion.

“This playground expansion represents the City of Delta’s long-standing commitment to creating accessible spaces in our community that everyone can enjoy. Our partnership with REACH has been essential to establishing this incredible new space for families that invites everyone to gather and participate in play together. Thank you to REACH, the Province of BC, and all those who helped make this playground a reality”

  • Mayor George V. Harvie

“By making playgrounds accessible, we create an inclusive environment for children of all abilities to learn and play with one another. We are proud to support this important work, partnering with the City of Delta, REACH, and donors to build spaces that benefit the entire community.”

  • Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth and Delta North MLA

“Outdoor play and playgrounds are crucial for preschoolers because they promote essential physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. REACH is proud to be part of this project and we are honored to be part of a community that invests in children of all abilities.”
