Delta Street Light Replacement Project

Delta is planning to replace existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights with energy-efficient LEDs over the next few years. These new lights will enhance public safety by improving visibility on sidewalks and roads at night while reducing light pollution. LEDs also have a longer life and require less maintenance.

The project will commence in 2023, starting with major roadways within Delta. Arterials, collectors, and local roadways will be included in the following years.

2023 Project Details

  • River Road (68 Street to 92 Street)
  • Nordel Way (84 Avenue to 120 Street)
  • Kittson Parkway / 64 Avenue (Westview Drive to 120 Street)
  • 82 Avenue (108 Street to 120 Street)

The installation is scheduled to start July 2023, and will be completed within the next few months. The project is expected to have minimal impacts on residents and businesses, with the possibilities of short-term lane closures lasting approximately 30 minutes per installation.

Benefits of LED Street Lights

  • Consumes about 50% less energy than current HPS street lights.
  • Requires less maintenance as they have a life span of up to 20 years.
  • Improves nighttime visibility, which will help improve traffic safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Produces a whiter and more natural light than the orange light emitted from the existing street lights.
  • Helps reduce our carbon footprint.

The switch to LED street lights may take some time to get used to. If you experience any issues with the replacement or notice a defect on a street light, please contact the Engineering Department at engineering@delta.ca or call 604-946-3260.
