News Release: City of Delta Celebrates Reopening of Westham Island Bridge

The City of Delta is pleased to mark the reopening of the Westham Island Bridge to vehicle traffic, restoring access to the mainland for Westham Island Residents and businesses.

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, Delta Council gathered with local dignitaries, farmers, and members of the Westham Island community to commemorate the bridge reopening, with a ceremonial parade of tractors driving across the bridge, led by multi-generational Westham Island farmer Gordon Ellis.

Following a barge strike on January 20, 2026, the Westham Island Bridge was closed to vehicles for 67 days, resulting in significant challenges for residents, farmers, and businesses. Sunday’s event marked the end of a significant effort from the City, TransLink, and others to provide supports during the closure. This included large and small barge services, a resident call centre, temporary shuttles, bottled water deliveries during a boil water advisory, and much more.

“Delta Council is relieved and excited to see the Westham Island Bridge reopen to vehicles and pedestrians,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “It has been a long journey to reach this point, and we are incredibly proud of our community, our City staff, the team at TransLink, and the many partners who have supported us along the way. Delta is a resourceful, compassionate, and resilient community, and these qualities have been on full display over the past two months. Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this project to completion.”

The City of Delta is incredibly grateful to Westham Island residents for their patience and understanding during this closure, and to the many partners who helped make it possible to provide a high level of support to residents and farmers. This includes TransLink, the Province of BC, Jeremy Birch from Mad Props Marine, and JJM Construction, in addition to countless City of Delta staff who went above and beyond in the service of residents.

While the bridge is now open, repair work continues, meaning that the navigation channel remains closed to marine traffic until further notice. Traffic control will remain on site at the bridge until the end of the month.
