Good evening. It is an extraordinary privilege to stand before you as Delta’s new Mayor. Taking the Oath of Office tonight, I feel deep gratitude for your trust and a profound responsibility to earn it every day.
To my family and friends—those who are here tonight and those watching from a distance—thank you for your patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in me. This journey has asked a great deal of the people closest to us. Your support has meant more than words can express.
I want to recognize everyone who ran in this election. Putting our names forward takes courage and many sacrifices. To outgoing Mayor George Harvie, thank you for your decades of service to our community...and to the outgoing members of Council, Jessie Dosanjh, Jennifer Johal, Dylan Kruger, and Rod Binder who I do have the privilege of calling a friend—thank you for your service and your many contributions to Delta.
To my Council colleagues both returning and newly elected, congratulations!
This election brought forward different teams, different perspectives, and different ideas about the future of Delta. Not everyone around this Council table campaigned together, and not everyone will always agree. But that is both the reality and the strength of local democracy.
The residents of Delta built this Council team. They have brought us together around this table, and in doing so, they have given us a shared responsibility that is bigger than any one campaign, any one individual, or any one political team.
I don’t expect us to agree on everything. I believe a healthy Council should challenge ideas, ask difficult questions, and bring different perspectives to the table. But we must do that with respect, with an open mind, and with a genuine willingness to find common ground—always keeping the best interests of Delta at the heart of our work.
I am committed to leading a Council where every voice is heard, where disagreement is welcomed, and where collaboration is expected. We arrived here by different paths, but I so am proud to be on this team.
To the City Manager, Peter Weeber, the senior leadership team, and all City staff. I know first hand the challenges of working through a local government election, so thank you for your work each day and for supporting this transition. Your expertise will be essential as we move forward together.
During this campaign, and over months of conversations across our communities, residents shared their ideas, frustrations, and hopes. We listened, asked questions, and built our platform around what we learned.
In speaking with Councillors Boisvert, Guichon and Bishop, they heard similar things—residents want a city council that listens, responds to the needs of communities and makes decisions in their best interest.
We will be getting to work on our priorities over the next few months, and I commit to focusing on accountable government, liveable neighbourhoods, and a safe and connected community.
With the support of staff, we will assess the resources required to implement our plan, and report publicly on our progress. Some changes will take time, but we will follow through on our commitments.
My life and professional experiences have taught me that leadership requires listening carefully, asking hard questions…and being open minded about the answers…and taking accountability for decisions. I will bring that approach to the Mayor’s office, with compassion and a determination to work together.
Tonight, I am hopeful because of the people who call Delta home: people who care deeply, give generously, and show up for one another.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Mayor. I am ready to work and fully committed to the responsibility you have entrusted to me and this Council team.
