City of Delta marks milestone at North Delta Track and Field with the delivery of the first two containers for an innovative fieldhouse

The City of Delta is excited to celebrate a significant milestone for the fieldhouse at North Delta Track and Field with the completion of underground work and the placement of the first two containers. This progress lays the foundation for an innovative two-storey modular building that will enhance the facilities at North Delta Track and Field.

This fieldhouse represents the final phase of development for the North Delta Track and Field Facility. Since its grand opening in 2021, the North Delta Track and Field has become a destination for athletics and community events, boasting eight competitive lanes, a natural grass infield, and covered spectator seating added in 2023.

Located at North Delta Secondary School, the City of Delta secured over $5.8 million in cost-share funding from the federal and provincial governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. This funding has been crucial in realizing the North Delta Track and Field Facility project, including construction of the new fieldhouse.

Mayor George V. Harvie expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The new fieldhouse at North Delta Track and Field will provide a unique venue for local groups to gather and connect, representing an exciting addition to our community’s social and recreation infrastructure. I am proud of the innovation in building a sustainable facility that brings our community together. Thank you to the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and all the community groups involved in making this project a success.”

The fieldhouse's innovative design incorporates shipping containers as its primary structural elements, ensuring durability and sustainability. It will be fully accessible, featuring barrier-free construction to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges, accessible washrooms, a lift providing access to the second floor, and automated doors partially funded by the Enabling Accessibility Fund.

Key spatial elements of the first floor of the fieldhouse include public washrooms, change rooms, strength and conditioning space, and sports equipment storage. The second floor features a meeting room and an outside observation deck.

Construction of the new fieldhouse is underway and expected to be completed by May 2024, enhancing the North Delta Track and Field's offerings for athletes and the community alike.
