The City of Delta is proud to be the recipient of $760,000 in provincial funding through the Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program, helping to provide more cycling infrastructure within Delta.
The funding received will support two active transportation projects that are scheduled for construction this year, providing a safer cycling infrastructure for the community. These projects will help offset the costs of providing protected cycle lanes on River Road and a new multi-use pathway along 56 Street.
“We want residents to feel safe and comfortable when they’re travelling across Delta,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “This funding from the Province allows us to move forward with projects that support active transportation and grow our transportation network, making people feel better connected no matter how they choose to get around.”
The River Road project continues the phased installation of protected cycling lanes to improve connectivity between Ladner and North Delta. The 56 Street project will extend the existing multi-use pathway from 6 Avenue to 8A Avenue and replace the deteriorating pathway with an improved connection for people walking, cycling, and rolling.
Both projects are located on TransLink’s Major Bikeway Network and are identified as priority routes in Delta’s Cycling Master Plan. These projects align with the City’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by making streets safer for all modes of transportation.
