Update: Public Advisory Regarding King Tides Season

Beach Grove in Delta

King tides and storm surges resulting in sudden increases in the seawater level can occur between November and February and are most common in Delta from late December to early January. By staying informed and preparing yourself for these events, you can help mitigate their impacts on your home and community.

This brochure includes a tide prediction calendar. Tides exceeding 4.9 metres in height are predicted between December 15-19 and again between January 3-5.

If you live in an area that may be affected by a king tide or storm surge event, such as Boundary Bay, Beach Grove, or Westham Island, empty sandbags and piles of sand are available throughout the winter storm season at the following locations:

  • 1A Ave Boat Launch
  • 3rd Ave Beach Access
  • 16th Ave Beach Access
  • 17A Ave (West of Beach Grove Elementary)
  • Ladner Works Yard
  • Seaview Road

The following safety precautions will help you stay prepared during an event:

  • Stay informed by keeping an eye on weather conditions.
  • Elevate valuables in your home and on your property.
  • Use sandbags to protect your home.
  • Create an evacuation plan and follow local authorities’ guidance in the event of an evacuation.
  • Assemble an emergency kit with food, water, and medical supplies.
  • Stay away from coastal areas until the event has passed.

City staff monitor conditions during storm surge events and install flood protection works, like sandbags and cement blocks, as needed. Portable pumps and generators may also be delivered to affected areas.
